I have been hearing a strange noise at night out back by my bird pens. I have just figured out it is a strange kind of fox call. What is the easiest way to catch or get rid of foxes, if a person can't see them, or find them? I've tried live traps, and they don't work. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sturdy coops and pens are the best defense for all predator
problems. But if you get a chance to kill overabundant
pests such as possums it should be done. If you are handy
with a gun you might get a chance to shoot your fox. I have
never killed a fox but have used the old shotgun on four
different occasions on poultry killing dogs. Each time I
fired exactly one shot and there was one very dead dog.
But I do not fire unless I can do it safely and not let
a wounded animal escape. The most difficult shot was at a
dog who was stalking two of my hens in my front yard who
had NO idea that this dog already had the remains of a
silkie rooster named Calico Kid in his stomach. Yes, the
hens were NOT harmed and I cut the dead dog open to check
the contents of his stomach.

The best remedy is an emu or mini donkey in my opinion.
But a really good way to educate your unwanted guests is to invite them into sniffing around the perimiters of your aviaries- we take some fresh feathers and a few pieces of dog food- sometimes pellets and or a piece of raw chicken in wicker basket -or in a depression on the ground. We fill the litter beneath the feathers and food with loads of black pepper, cayenne and cinnamon. If you lay the feathers and or shavings down carefully you can make it seem like there is not a layer of spices lurking under and you just have to make sure that the chicken wing or whatver is tied down with a string so the animal (s) have to dig about to get to it-and in the process get a noseful of spices that will absolutely ruin not only hunting the rest of the day but also avoiding enemies..
After that just add some black pepper and cayenne and cinnamon in the dustwallows every weekend or so when you are cleaning out old feathers and poop. This way the birds will begin to get coated in it as well- helps if they ahve wood ashes or powdered lime added to the concotion in the dust wallow so the spices last longer and go further afield. Pretty soon your local varmits won' take much interest in fowl any longer

There are creatures that do not seem to even notice hot
pepper. Some years ago a neigbor's dog was loitering on my
property and I wished to send him home without harming him.
So I gave the dog a piece of bread liberally sprinked with
red pepper hoping that it would send him running home. But
this dog just ate the bread and kept the smile on his face.
At least I learned to not waste my bread and hot pepper on
visiting dogs

Hi You are right, live traps do not generally work for catching foxes but they can be caught with them. I would suggest having someone with experience catch your fox for you if you can't shoot it yourself. The best option may be to use live catch foot hold traps or snares depending on where you live and what is legal. I have had good success catching and relocating them using the foot hold trap.

My father in law own a game farm and has several run with pheasants, chukar, and quial. He keeps live foot traps on all four corners of the bird runs. It is very effective, as predators will usually circle around trying to find an entry to the birds.
