Here in California we lost several VVA accredited VSOs in the last year. In most cases, they lost their accreditation through VVA because they had not performed and/or failed to document their handling of cases. There has also been a concern about VHA policy changes that potentially puts the liability (financial, etc.) on VVA for claims or appeals. The California State Council of VVA currently has only 4-5 VSOs throughout the state and some of them have suspended taking new claims because of their current caseload backlogs. While other parts of the country may have a different system, California has the County Veteran Service Officer program, which provides claim services for veterans for free. Several other veteran organization also have members or employees who provide VSO services.

On the down side, I have heard many complaints for veterans that some VSOs wanted them to pay or make a contribution, or join certain organizations before the VSO would assist with a VA claim. Although some veterans are unaware, they should not have to pay to get assistance from a VSO. The VVA and County VSO programs provide these services free to the veteran.

So, if you need a VSO, check with your local county veterans affairs office or some of the other local veterans organizations.
