Terry,

I appreciate your frequent poems and how gamely you share your feelings. They always seem heartfelt. Here are some thoughts that occur to me as I read your post.


I long for the good old days of the past
When people in general had really cared
Whether our family members or our friends

Life for me has only become richer as I have aged. I have many good memories of times past but in general the world is ever improving. The present has always been an improvement on the past. In any case I don't long, pine, wish, hope or pray. Instead I consider, choose, plan, and work for the things I want. As in the old English proverb "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride".


Everyone looked out for each other then
They would help each other when needed
They'd always been there for each other

I have always found folks to be eager to lend a hand. Now, just as when I was young, I find people to be reliably friendly and game to assist at the drop of a hat.


But everyone is into their own things now
Most times they're to busy to be bothered
Even siblings rarely talk to each other

The trick, it seems to me, is to stay clear of anyone who drains you whether they are kin or not. When I was young I could never understand why my father didn't seem to like my brother who is my only sibling. Then I grew up and discovered my brother is not someone I would choose as a friend.


The world has now become too self centered
What's in it for me is their first thought
If there's no monetary rewards why bother

I choose to be with those whose values reflect my own. I stay clear of those whose don't.


And on those rare occasions when we do meet
Every word and subject becomes a competition
It seems that those gatherings will end badly

"Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me."


I guess because I'm old I just can't fake it
I am who I am and I can't pretend otherwise
I'm not out to impress anyone else in life

I work to be productive and to improve myself. Where I am successful I take pride in my accomplishments. I am ever trying to be a better man.


Now days it seems everyone puts on an act
As though they are better than anyone else
At 68 yrs. old I can't play all the games

Some people are better and some are worse. See my previous comment.


I'm still who I've been right from the start
I still care about family & friends as always
But somehow I have been left behind by them

It is probably generally true that I am the same essential person as I was as a young man but I have never wanted to stand still. I live by the principle that "every passing moment is another opportunity to turn it all around." If I don't like what I see in the mirror I choose to change.


I'm not materialistic as many of them are now
I like to live a simple yet comfortable life
And if someone needs a helping hand I'm there

The world has moved on and it has passed me by
An old relic of the past history of this world
Yet I still have my values & integrity intact

Life is learning and as I learn more I am always prepared to revise my view of things. I do not defer to tradition, dogma, authority or any majority. I think independently. Nothing is more rewarding for me than to discover I am totally wrong.
