Subject: Veterans Day

Here is an excellent article which echoes remarks I have several times posted concerning the common practice of assuming everyone is a Christian.

We all live in a world filled with a great many views. And although here in the US Christianity currently is and will likely remain the largest religious minority for some years to come it is counter factual to suggest that we have ever been all one viewpoint with respect to belief in the super-natural. Honoring Veterans is inexorably tied to honoring the foundational principles as represented in our Constitution. The United States Constitution, the Supreme Law of the Land, is secular by design. "...no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States" and none is required to serve in the US Armed Forces.

Non-Christian veterans are routinely disregarded or ignored by virtue of the choice of language used in our memorials, rememberances, ceremonies and patriotic songs. Programs for active duty service personnel have also disregarded and dismissed the non-Christians. Please reconsider and rethink your views, language and practices as you read this short article. As we honor those who have served this Veterans Day consider the huge minority of non-Christians and how they would wish to be remembered and honored.

I posted this elsewhere in response to a typical false claim that we all fight for a nation "under God".

"No, they did not "ALL" give their lives for this great nation to be free "under God". Many were atheists or held non-theistic viewpoints and would never have assented to sacrificing their lives for any god. It demeans those who have sacrificed their lives to put words in their mouths or attribute to them views they did not hold. It is the height of disrespect to make accusations of the dead who can no longer stand for their beliefs. Show respect for those non-believers who lost their lives fighting for freedom by omitting such an obvious lie when you reference them. If you truly want to honor "ALL" fallen veterans don't presume to claim they were all believers. Do not soil their reputations by telling lies about them. Their surviving family and friends will thank you for that courtesy."

Each and every one of us swore an oath to "bear true faith and allegiance" to the Constitution and its great ideals. That requires much more than defending our country. It means holding the Constitutional principles as sacrosanct. If you served but cannot or will not actively defend the free principles embodied in the Constitution then you are not keeping your oath.
