Subject: Resignation!

Resignation
To all concerned, as of this moment, (With a heavy heart) I hereby resign as a member of the Vietnam Security Police Association. (This decision was a very difficult one.)
I have been a member for more years than I can remember and have enjoyed every moment of it. But, due to a recent incident, where I posted my opinion on the VSPA B.B. regarding ANYONE, who disrespected the flag of this great country, the post became controversial and was removed from the B.B. I was insulted in the post (Called an Airhead, which means stupid where I come from) this individual is a VSPA Officer. A total absents of dignity and respect! I waited for an apology from the Officer or someone in the leadership. Regretfully, the apology never came! I will not be maligned by anyone! I have never stooped to calling any member of the VSPA derogatory names! I am not anger, I am deeply disappointed!
Over the years, I have made many true and loyal friends in the VSPA of which I’d like to mention just a few now: Don Poss, a young A/2c Dog man, whom I first met on a monsoon night in November of 1965, he was working a post just off the runway, at DaNang AFB. He had a mean dog, named: Blacky. (Don has been a good friend for years)
Glenn Wilson (A true solider) Newell Shultz, (A man of his word) Steve Gattis (whose tireless efforts obtained the citation that I received, which I’m deeply thankful for.) Jack Smith (A true gentleman and good friend) Pat Houseworth (Tougher than nails…smile) Sam Lewis (Who always tells it like it is) Bruce Ross (An Officer, gentleman and true friend,) Howard Yates, (A real poet, and true friend) Terry Sasek, (a friend that you can always depend on) Lew Goldberg (an honest friend, that’s always tells it like it is) Bud Owens, Terrell Morris, Bob Mitchell, Larry Gramps, Ken de Russy, Monk, Mike Kennedy, Van Digby, John Paul Coakley, Steve Ray , Ramps and many others! I salute each of you, for your loyal friendship over the years!
Now, I would like to mention just a few facts on my behalf: A few years back, I composed and authored the book entitled: Security Police, Vietnam & Thailand War Stories. I donated all the royalties from the book to the VSPA, which over a period time, amounted to several hundred dollars. I also authored: Badge of Honor in War and Peace. I want to thank everyone, who submitted stories for these books!
Incident: At approximately 0200 hours on November 21st of 1965, I was the NCOIC of a perimeter patrol at DaNang AFB. When a C-121 flare ship crash landed in a minefield, adjacent to the runway. I informed CSC that I was going to make my way to the down craft, to attempt to help the crew out of the craft. The plane had broken into several sections. I made my way to the nose section, entered the cockpit and help the copilot from the craft, (His jaw was broken and he had bitten through his tongue, and was bleeding profusely) it was raining and very muddy, I fell from the cockpit and was injured (Back and right knee) I spent a month in the hospital in Japan and eight months in the hospital at Eglin AFB, Florida. I met a medical board and was medically discharged in April of 1966. (I had to wear a steel back brace for over a year after discharge and still suffer lower back pain to this day) Seventeen years in the Air Force gone! The Copilot was 1st Lt. Roger Rucker, who eventually became Col. Rucker. Col. Rucker has on two occasions come all the way from South Carolina to Missouri to visit with me. He’s thanked me numerous times for helping him out of the down aircraft. We stay in contact to this day. I was recommended for a Bronze star by M/Sgt. Warren E. Oliff (Flight Commander at that time) for my rescue efforts. But, for some unknown reason, the recommendation never reached Air Force.
Finally, in 2015 (Fifty year later) I was awarded the Air Force commendation medal for valor, thanks to Steve Gattis’ long efforts and others. I have posted several war poems on the VSPA B.B over the years. I mention these things, to give the reader some background of events and achievements during my long tour in the VSPA! I thank each of you again, and now it’s time to say Goodbye! It’s with great sadness, that I feel obligated to resign. I hope each of you will understand my frustration and feelings, regarding this matter.
Your OLD jungle buddy,
Jackie R. Kays
S/Sgt. USAF (Med. Retired)
Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. (I will be 85 years old in April of next year)
It’s been my pleasure, privilege and honor to have marched in cadence with each of you, all these years!
“I am forever honored, for I have marched with heroes!â€
