Subject: GREG & SHEILA CAIN

Hello to all.

I have been asked by our President Greg Cain and his wife, Sisterhood President, Sheila Gervase-Cain, to provide the following information regarding Sheila and the medical issues they are facing together. Until now, those issues have remained private so that they could prepare for what must come next month. They are making very serious decisions that will affect their lives. Sheila has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She must have surgery on June 24th. The stage or progression has not been determined at this time, although it is extremely serious and will require radiation. In addition to the breast cancer, she must also have back surgery on June 6th, something that cannot wait. Sheila’s surgeon and oncologist both feel that one surgery will not affect the other, but must be done for both quality of life and for survival.

Greg and Sheila are more than just the tough Veterans and loving couple that we know. The surgeries come at a time when they have finally achieved retirement and the ability to do what they wanted to do in life, which was to serve each other while also serving the VSPA. They have attended every reunion together since 2002. Sheila and Greg have managed our Hospitality Room at the reunions for several years, always making it possible for our members to have food and refreshments completely free without cost. Sheila has also coordinated our reunion raffles and they have donated Air Police and Security Police badges for many years. Last year, they donated over 50 badges for our raffles. As president of the VSPA Sisterhood, Sheila has supported wives, friends and daughters of our members in ways that very few know about. She and Greg have flown across the country for funerals, and have reached out to our members during illness and family crisis. When there was a medical issue or a problem in a member’s family, including mine, there was never a time when they said no. In 2006 and 2007, they contributed a great deal of information and experience from the New York VVA regarding parade planning as we prepared for Washington, D.C. and the 25th Anniversary of The Wall. They have built a lasting legacy of care, of taking care of their own and taking care of those who take care of their own.

Now, as they move toward the surgeries in June, the VSPA also moves toward October and our reunion. Greg and Sheila are committed to being there, to share their lives with their brothers and sisters in the VSPA, just as they did at the most recent mini-reunion in Dayton.

It is now our turn to take care of Greg and Sheila. They need our support. Whether it is cards, letters, phone calls or prayers, they need us to stand with them in this fight just as they have stood with so many of us over the years. They are not asking for your help, I am. Simple words of encouragement and your awareness that they are still working to make sure that we have a successful reunion in Tampa will go a long way as they go through the surgeries and begin the long fight to recovery and being cancer free.

VSPA members may post messages of support on the bulletin board. Members of the Sisterhood may use the private Sisterhood Bulletin Board to discuss their own experiences with breast cancer in order to support Sheila during this very frightening period of her life. Greg needs your support, too, as he cares for Sheila. I am posting their address in the open with their permission:

Greg & Sheila Cain
4 Woodward Court
West Seneca, New York 14224-3628

There are times in our lives when we must look beyond ourselves and consider those who have affected us very deeply, to say thanks and offer support. Believe me as I say this from the heart, NOW IS THE TIME!
