Sometime in late '63 I was charged with guarding a General's C123 overnight on the flightline in Danang. The flightline had been cleared and his was the only aircraft there. I was told no one else would be there, so if someone showed up it was likely a VC. About 3AM here comes a Vietnamese guy in civies riding a bike toward the plane! I challenged him and radioed for backup. Help arrived, they patted him down, and sure enough he had a .45 tucked in his belt under his shirt. Woohoo! I've captured a VC.
I was a hero for about 3 hours until they found out he was a Vietnames Quan Canh (police) charged with guarding the General's plane also. Lack of communication almost cost the guy his life, and the worst part - I'm not a hero anymore...
