On June 19, 1961 I was sent to Lackland AFB and assigned to Squadron 3703 Flt 839. Upon sewing on a blue stripe was sent to Richards Gebaur AFB, KC MO where I spent time on the flight line, gate guard duty, and patrolling the base after I leaned to drive a 1961 Chevy Apache, later about my driving skills. Side note; Harry S. Truman entered the back gate while I manned it, he was chauffeured and riding in a 1940;s style car, Sewed on my second stripe and was sent to Elmendorf AFB, AK where I shivered on the flight line in 50 below wrapped in a aircraft heater hose only to appear when the coffee truck arrived. On Good Friday 1964 a 9.2 earthquake struck while I was on duty as in the CSC as a Plotter. We crawled up from the basement and raced across the bucking street and held on to a chain link fence until someone yelled, “power lines overhead.” Sewed on my third stripe and signed up for another four and was sent to Mather AFB, CA and was assigned to LE duties as gate guard and area patrol. Shortly after I was assigned Desk Sergeant. Was selected by our Commanding Officer to be sent to Washington DC as Presidential Honor Guard. I quickly volunteered for Vietnam and arrived April 13, 1967 at Phu Cat AFB. On May 1st 1967 I sewed on my fourth stripe and was assigned as SAT Leader. My driving skills were apparent when the First Sergeant approached me and stated, “One more jeep breakdown and I’ll take a stripe.” With fifteen months remaining on a second enlistment I reported to Francis E. Warren AFB, WY, and on June 19th, 1969 I elected to be discharged from the Air Force.

As a seventeen year old who had no idea about life or the world the Air Force provided me with experiences, challenges and memories that remain with me today.
