Hello to All: It was Oct 1957 when I first left my home state
(CT) for Lackland AFB. Believe I only spent 3(?) wks in basic
then to AP Tech. School. I recall in one of my ltrs home that
I told Mom/Dad that we were studying military law. They
thought I was going to be a LAWYER (guess I didn't tell them
what "AP" stood for...) My first assign. was w/1400th APSq in
Iceland (not too bad; guys in Greenland went there for R&R &
we went to Denmark...)! It was a 12 month tour that went 15
months (USAF wasn't allowed to hire enough back then). I re-
turned to Griffiss AFB, Rome, NY where the 4039th BW(SAC) was 1st bedding-down as a tenant unit. Stayed w/the 4039th
APSq until I re-enlisted in 1961 & went to Homestead AFB, FL. & was w/the 19thCDS until 1964 (while there the Cuban
Missle Crisis started (had MIGs doing nite recons over us)
and ended. Was the on-duty Comm/Plotter when a Russian convoy was ordered not to cross the line. We had 383 F-100
etc, a/c plotted on the board. Went to DEFCON 2 and every
a/c started engines (CSC bldg shook). The rest is now history. Left the 19th in 1964 (didn't want to, but SAC
found-out that the "..." now had subs w/missles too, so SAC
chose to close all their "beach front" bases & move A/C NORTH!). As SAC "desired" I went north to Wurtsmith AFB, MI,
& the 379thAP/SP Sq. Stayed there til 1968 and then to
U-Tapao AB Thailand and the 635thSPS til 1969 (could not
get-away from those B-52s). Returned "home" to the 4500th
SPS @ Langley AFB, Va. Stayed w/the base SPS til 1972 then
to the TAC IG/SP @ Langley til 1974. Went to the USAFE/SP
@ Ramstein AB, Germany 74-76. Rotated back to SAC and the
449th SPS, Kincheloe AFB, MI (76-77/base deactivated). I
was transferred to the 97th SPS, Blytheville AFB, Ark until
I retired in 1979. "No Mom&Dad, I didn't become a lawyer,
but I did serve w/the best light infantry squadrons in the
USAF's arsenal." Welcome Home. Ray.
