For those of you who got to take your R&R, where did you end up going to for it? We were told that we had to have been in country for at least 3 months before we could put in for an R&R, and that you'd have to have at least 3 months left to serve on your tour of duty yet after you came back from R&R. So we had to take it sometime in the middle 6 months of our tour of duty, by the end of Jan.69 I'd already gone back to my own unit and was working full time on both ours and the VNAF's crash-fire and their crash-rescue trucks and showing them how to maintain and repair their own trucks that they had gotten from the Air Force. I was the only mechanic at Binh Thuy that was working on the fire trucks, I had a staff sergeant who was my NCOIC and would stand over you watching you like a hawk ready to strike if you had made even the smallest error and would stand around with the firemen talking but did very little actual work on the trucks themselves so it was left to me to keep everything running. By the time the middle of Sept.69 rolled around I already had 9 months in-country so I had given up any hope of ever getting an R&R from Nam, then in the second week of Oct.69 we got another fire truck mechanic who had rotated in from the States and the new NCOIC we had gotten in to replace my old one called me into his office and told me he was going to bend the rules just this one time an let me go on R&R after all even though I only had 4 weeks left on my tour of duty because he was very impressed with the fact that I had been able to keep all of our trucks and also the VNAF's trucks running by myself during my tour there. I couldn't believe it and was on a plane to Saigon the next day for my R&R to Bangkok, when I checked into the R&R center an old Master Sergeant called me over and said he had a good friend down at Binh Thuy who had called him to ask for a favor for one of his guys (me) who was going to Bangkok for R&R. He said there as an opening for Sydney, Australia leaving in an hour and there was a seat on it for me he said he didn't know what I had done to impress his good friend but that today was my lucky day. I never would have ever thought that I would ever get to go to Australia in my lifetime let alone on my R&R from Nam, I had the best vacation ever and I only had 3 weeks left on my tour of duty when I got back to Binh Thuy and I thanked my NCOIC every one of those days until I had rotated back home from Vietnam.
