I am sure that Col. Bullock could provide more detailed information, but there are two references to the beginning of the AZR course. The first is in Retired MSgt Chris Armold’s excellent recent book, Sky Cops & Peacekeepers. I was rereading the book last night and remember seeing his reference to the AZR course. He referenced an online book/manuscript written by James Lee Conrad and Jerry M. Bullock (http://www.afsf.lackland.af.mil/Index/Final_Draft_SF_History_V2-1_Mar_2010.pdf). Their book is titled “Defenders of The Force - The History of The United States Air Force Security Forces 1947–2006.” According to their book, the AZR course came about after a three-day conference on training at Hamilton AFB, California, in November 1965. It was originally designated the AZR77150 course and started as a three-day course. Based on both of these books, it is obvious that the first session and a few following iterations of the course were little more than “show & tell” with little practical experience for those who attended in the early days. I would venture to say that many of who went through these or even later expanded AZR courses wished they had been longer or more comprehensive before we ended up on the perimeter of a base in SEA and the stuff they told us about became REAL. I imagine even the short course would have been welcome for the guys who went before 1965.
