Bob,

Most security "experts" will tell you that there is no real right answer to your question. A lot depends on your computing habits and how well you protect yourself.
If you visit high-risk sites you are obviously more endangered. If you are one who clicks on every alluring link (aka click bait), you become very high risk. NOTE: Those links can be anything from sex offers, political commentary or bargain prices. If you click on links contained in e-mails received from unknown sources, you are very high risk.
If you are a cautious internet/e-mail user, a free antivirus program, like Avast will work for you. Windows 10 version of Defender is also very good and it is Free.
I have used Norton 360 for years and like it. Some people don't. A lot of experts recommend Kaspersky. It is very good but I just don't trust the Russians not to put some sort of code in their software to steal my passwords. I think McAfee is too invasive.
Remember, a computer can only have ONE antivirus program active. If you have more than one, they will compete and keep identifying the opponent as a threat. Eventually, they will lock up your PC.
Regardless of which Antivirus program you use, you should also have a really good Malware detector. I think Malwarebytes is the best and it is free. Ad Aware is also good. Most antivirus programs (Norton 360, Kaspersky, McAfee, Windows Defender, et al) have Malware protection modules built in. However, even though you can only have one Antivirus program, you can have multiple Malware detectors.
If you are an average user, who doesn't take risk, I think Windows Defender is adequate, IF (Big IF) you also install a malware detector, like Malwarebytes.
