Subject: Madness

Was it the absence
of the music that made it
so strange that his body
was swaying to its rhythm?

Was he hearing the music
from a timeless dance,
which had long since ceased?

Sitting in the asylum grounds,
madness sometimes ceased to be
a refuge from reality,
rising to become incarnate
with a leaden sky.

Can a madman find sanity
in such moments?
When reason, indelibly numb,
might invert his mind?

No one could share
his burden of conscience
or plumb the depth
of his insentient sorrow.

No one ever dared,
not even his keepers.
