Subject: Ode to a Friend

She hasn’t slowed down much
since I met her,
although I’m sure
I’ve tripped my way
into her thoughts
a time or two
and she still laughs
at talk of patience,
although I haven’t given up
on what a little love can do.

Every now and then
I catch her Romanian side,
the hunger on her lips
before she pulls it back inside.
There are moments when
she’s in my arms and smiles so wide,
just like a kitten purring,
snuggled up so tight.

She still likes to let me know she’s tough,
but worries I may find her crazy at times
as she reminds me that she likes to win
should I forget and over eagerly try.
She delights in the reaction
her broccoli menu brings to me
and laughs so hard when I squint in disgust
at her favorite George Foreman delicacy.

And we cry together
over our failed six packs,
vowing to come back stronger
once the holidays have passed.
And you know I adore her most
when we both relax
get a little bit silly,
hold hands and this world forget.
