Subject: Nighttime Jitters

As I was starting to drift asleep,
I was startled by a sound.
Sitting straight up in bed,
I looked in the dark around.

Not sure of what it was,
I ventured out to see.
Turning on lights as I went,
I prayed that it was just me.

I checked each room in full,
Feeling like a scared kid.
My son was with his father that night.
My dog had ran and hid.

So, on my own I secured the fort,
And convinced myself it was fine.
Then back to bed I went.
The sound was only in my mind.

But just to put the dog at ease,
I left the hall light on that night.
I, of course, was not scared at all,
But it couldn’t hurt . . . right?
