Subject: half dog

And we came upon the half-dog
lying in the road.
It said,

There was one along here not long ago.
Beautiful long hair,
beauty in her eyes
a grace about her
as she read the nightmare.

"I have not heard such talk,"
said she, "since his lecture
on the refusal of gravity,"
referring to the great talker.
She then took her knife and filled the chalice,
the price of admission.

Menisca was her name,
and I could see through her
to the rising swarm.

There was first the field
of impossibly tall stalks,
what might be giant maize in bloom.
And then the men like ants
from out of it
to talk in strange words
at the tree stump
while many miles away
the flame roared.

And behind them
an old house
inside which were children
a boy and girl
playing seek and find.
And the boy bringing a box
inside which was
a thing unliving
eating the debris of stinking dead.
And inside the unliving were the gears unwinding.
