Subject: Mortality Ramble - One

Mortality Ramble - One

It is my own mortality
that has me thinking
in terms of years
and how many
there are to leave
a mark
before passing
through the door

A trip on the horizon
is inevitable
sooner or later
and probably sooner
than any of us want

No one wants to
deal with any of this
but it's there
and must be tended to

I am reminded of labour
and birth, I remember clearly
thinking when I was having
Michael, that there was no
getting out of it, he was there
and I was giving birth to him
and there was no changing
my mind, it just happens
with pain and joy

Maybe it is the loss
of control, you can't turn back
it's the same in death
it comes, no matter
who you are, or what you do

Rambling won't get me out
of any of this, or these emotions
that ride hard, then soft
up, down, sideways
into my flesh, plunge
deeper than I want to go

But there is a freedom
in bleeding

on the edge
sometimes
the tears come

and with the news
I just received
a new level
of sad awareness
reaches somewhere
I wasn't ready for

I can't find words
to express this

I sink
