For an "Astonishingly poor" system it has worked pretty damn well over the years.

Otherwise, they'd never have decreed

The idea of it originally was that it would not have to operate in a party system and after the problem with the Adams/Jefferson presidency-vice presidency that was change for obvious reasons.

You have no idea what you are talking about do you? The President while powerful is far from a dictator. He has no power to make war on his own, write laws, raise taxes or funds, appropriate funds for programs, his vetoes of laws can be overridden by the Congress with enough votes or laws, executive orders, ect can be declared unconstitutional by the courts. Most people from other countries have a tendency to ascribe to the President far more power than he actually has, he is strong but each branch of government also has very strong checks over the other branches.

A nothing like bright up old laws is there, I am sure I can find a law or two from most countries from that time period that are just as bad.
