Further to Japan attacking the base at Pearl Harbour, I think you will find that Germany and Italy honoured their treaties with Japan and declared war with the US. So further proof that the US joined on their own decision in self defence.

This is also evident in WWI. In an attempt to blockade the UK, German naval boats were sinking merchant ships carrying supplies from the US. They could handle this, thats a part of war. The US got nasty however, when the Germans started to dink NEUTRAL CIVILLIAN travel liners as well. Once again the US joined the way in Europe on their own accord.
