The one advantage of being an authoritarian state is that China is able to develop a long term strategy that will make it stronger in both "soft" and "hard" power in the future. This has been evident since Deng Xiaoping led the country in the 1980s. It is able to promote economic growth in the areas that matter while avoiding the burden of excessive military commitments that are a drain on the economy like the USA and the former USSR, or short term economic measures (that may be detrimental in the longer term) that prevail in most Western democracies.
