It used to be that members had to be linked to the UK as in a dominion but they changed it to allow republics. All members have to accept a certain criteria of human rights etc, that the US would most probably pass. All members must also recognise the queen as head of the commonwealth (doesnt have to be head of state) I think the total criteria is laid out in the harare and edinburgh declarations. Dont see why the USA shouldnt join it the Anglosphere should stick close to each other if u ask me, but without comprising relations between neighbours
