Subject: Looking for a Pen Pal in genealogy research ( serious amature)

Looking for a history buff to give me a hint as to what my Great grand dad William V Hopkins income may have been working as a stone mason in England in the years 1820 to1857. He and his three sons migrated to the US about 1857. Could he have paid his own way? How can I find the name of the boat? Just when did they leave? Any help will be greatly appreciated. William was born about 1806 somewhere in England
