Jack, while I agree that the US would probably qualify to join the Commonwealth I honestly can’t see it doing so. As an American citizen, I doubt that my country would agree to join the Commonwealth any time soon. It would be nice to see a closer Anglosphere, but there many in the USA who think joining a group like the Commonwealth would be an affront to our national sovereignty. Heck, there is quite a bit of dissention over NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) linking the USA to its immediate neighbors. Any system in which someone other than the president is seen as head of state (even though the queen is head of the Commonwealth, and not necessarily head of state for Commonwealth countries, many Americans would not see the difference) would face huge opposition, especially now under Obama who has already been accused of trying to "sell out" the USA to make it more like the UK (healthcare). Bit of a pity though, at least for the Commonwealth, maybe some day... :]
