One advantage to Britain was the co-operation of the Dominions during the the two world wars but this was voluntary in no way could Britain force Canada Austalia S.A or NZ into these wars India was moving to Dominion status & the second world war speeded up its independence, the only advantage to British people in general of having an Empire was the means of leaving the UK & emigrating to another english speaking part of the world to better their lives. Individuals might make fortunes from the Empire but of course not every body was Cecil Rhodes.
