Inflation in the US was a on average a little lower than in the UK during that time period, about 2%, over 56 years it does take much each up that much money. If you want to see for yourself how fast it can eat up money, you there are several sites that contain the inflation rates and the change of price level for the United State and the United Kingdoms.

There is two choice on that one, either they drew it up with no intention of making of profit or they expected lower inflation over the time period. Like I said if anyone knows were I can find the year by year payments, I would be happy to both discount there total values back to 1945 USD and adjust them to 2006 USD. Based off the figures there, its pretty unlikely the US made much of any of profit off of the loans.

Britain could of paid the United States back far earlier than it did, the reason it took the entire life of the loan to pay us back was once the loan was made, that was economically sensible thing to do. When some one gives you cheap money you don't pay it back quickly. If the United States sole interest had been breaking up the British empire we wouldn't have made the loan in the first place, the loan was beneficial to the British economy by adding more funds to it. There were other policies of the United States that weren't favorable to the empire, but the loan wasn't one of them.
