Actucal the US army, not the entire US military, was the 16th in the World before, for example the US navy was far better off the army relative to other countries and par with about any nation. There was more to do with the US rise to a super power than just our industry not being bombed during the war, even before the war the United States GDP already was far larger than that of the UK. So it wasnt just the aftermath of the war but the decision of the US government to come out of isolation and devote a large percentage of the country's GDP to military matters.
While it utterly ridiculously to think that the US and UK would have gone to war in 1945, it impossible to say who would of one with out knowing what would have happen leading up to he war. Whether or not you would have a arms race before hand, has the UK or the US, or both start rearmament before hand, has the United States undertaken the two ocean navy program as it did historically. With out setting some kinds of bounds it pretty hard to say anything. I would say in general the longer the war last the more it favors the United States.
