The war from America's perspective was over a few things, but taking land from Canada wasn't the main objective. They were mainly angry about the impressment of American sailors into the British navy (a practice which stopped after the war), and the British preventing American expansion into the south and west by supporting hostile indian tribes (the tribes were largely crushed by the end of the war).
The attacks on Canada were more a military strategy than a main war objective, although yes, they were a disaster.
