Yes, EU gives wonderful example of "people can choose". Just remember EU constitution failed to pass referendum, and now it is adopted with small cosmetically changes without bothering to learn peoples opinion. Add also tons and tons of bureaucratic regulations of every aspect of business and private life.

EU is a socialist-bureaucratic empire, really the new EUSSR. And this new EUSSR ends the same way as old USSR though I do not believe it will endure 70 years.

With respect you have missed the point I was trying to make...that identity is "software" and you as a healthy adult have the right to choose what "software" you want to have. Now you may reply that your parents for the most part programmed you...that is true but you do still have freedom a healthy adult to choose.

Now say you were brought up thinking your identity is one of being a WASP (a white anglo saxon protestant) this make up may include your views about colour, traditions and so on. An example of colour is how 'some' north Europeans consider being white is akin to being racially Nordic. Now this is totally in the thought process, the software. In Brazil for example the numbers of people considering themselves white have actually gone up in the last decade as people with a larger range of pigmentation consider themselves to be in this category.

Now it is a sad truth that generally in Europe and also various part of the world people consider themselves better because they have a lighter skin tone.

My argument is that these classifications are not only nonsense for the modern world because they are software but also they can sometimes be used for a glass ceiling at best and oppression at the worst level.

I propose to you that identity is not a constant state rather it is in a state of flux. The EU is at least trying to providing the framework and education for you to choose and build your identity. Which is more than can be said for Europe's past!
