The EU probably would have been better off limiting itself to Western Europe and possibly limiting expansion to the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia. With expansion into Eastern Europe and the Balkans the bloc has become too big and even more politically disunified. Also, most of these countries like Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and the former Yugoslav states are poor and likely to be an economic burden that will hamper the EU for decades to come.
