I personally think identity is becoming the core issue in politics. Religious / National / Ethnic and so on. I think this is wrong, still freedom being freedom people "can choose".
Now the motto of the European Union is 'unity in diversity' and the question should be how can this be maintained. I do not say that the success of the EU is the most likely scenario rather that it has the potential to succeed and that I would endorse that. The EU is a live project that has its roots at various points in history, the most recent being WW2. Other points including going backward in history the reformation, the great schism and the wanting to resurrect Roman Empire [sic].
Now you could wear a cynical hat and say it is a mess and will fail, perhaps going the same way as Yugoslavia. That type of Europe would follow the Nationalistic version of a united Europe.
Other divides could include Ethnic: latin, slavic and nordic making up the 3 largest ethnic groups.
Religion would probably be Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant.
The three possible outcome are meant to be cynical! With me playing the devils advocate if you will. I do not indorse any of those!!
The EU is in danger of failing to unite. I do think there will be struggles with Islam and the rest of Europe and this 'may' produce a European civil war. Still the goal should be 'unity in diversity' this means that citizens need to be educated that there are many paths to God. If I were being pessimistic I would say the only way that this could be resolved would be after an inconclusive long civil war a total war with China followed about mid century with a Chinese victory, Europe would have been exhausted. The Chinese (in 2050 the richest nation of Earth) debated about whether to install a Morgenthau plan reducing EU to pre industrial times thus preventing it from inflicting more damage on the world...in the end the Chinese decided to pursue a new massive Marshall plan with the aim of making the EU at peace with itself - Unity in its diversity!

Let us hope the unity in diversity can be achieved sooner regardless of your background.
