Two things to add to this, first of all don't forget to add Spain to the equation who were smarting over the loss of Florida a decade or so earlier. The other item is about France. The Revolutionary War was just one more battleground in the long eighteenth century antagonism between Britain and France. Britain of course had surprisingly beaten the French out of North America in the Seven Years War 1756 - 1763. The French were humiliated by being beaten by a smaller, upcoming nation and were looking for anyway to get their revenge on Britain. Getting involved in the Revolutionary Wars was just such an opportunity. However, their dabbling in this rebellion would actually sew the seeds of their own destruction. They spent so much on supporting the American rebels and building their Navy up that they would fatally stretch their tax base. They did not have access to the sophisticated banking system that had bankrolled the British victory in the Seven Years War. They had to rely on direct taxation to finance themselves. It is no exageration to say that the French support for the American Revolution would lead to their own Revolution a decade later as the government strained to pay the price for the humiliation of their old enemy.

Let them eat cake!
