ABOUT BRUCE COPELAND, THE LIKELY WRITER OF THE ABOVE POSTING
[Wantoks, please excuse this information posting if you have already read it. It is put up only in response to spam postings like you see here]


If you have spent much time on pngscape.net and PNG internet discussion sites over the couple years you’ll likely have run across porn/hate postings against Papua New Guineans which fit a particular pattern. The postings are worded in a similar way, are nearly always superficial, and sometimes posted again and again with little variation. The poster never replies to questions or will engage in any kind of discussion, apart from pretending to be a second person and replying to their own postings. These spam postings first started in mid-2009 and got really bad by the middle of 2011.

Up to recently, this spam mostly centered around sex (especially anal) and rubbished Papua New Guineans living in Australia including members of the Kelegai, Noipo, Puye, Goddard and Pape families, but especially Philma Kelegai. The typical writing style shows in this example: “It has now been confirmd that Miriam Waters, of Mooroobol Cairns has been writing sick and defaming messages all over the internet, aiming her abuse at innocent people. Miriam, who has NEVER had a job, slutbagged her way into Australia. MIRIAM = fark off out of Australia or we will shove a wombat up your arse!”

Here’s another, very recent example: “Philma in menopause
December 5 2011 at 12:58 PMDOTTO
well its finally happened, and thank god earlier then later, world famous PNG slut Philma kelegai has started going into menopause!!!!!!!!! now we are probably gonna have to put up with that **** going on in her life!
farkin hell, puttin up with her ranting all over the internet for the last 15 years was bad enough,
FARKIN WHORE PHILMA!!!”

The purpose of the document that you are now reading is to give an overall picture of the evidence that links Australian expat Bruce Copeland to this spam. This information is being posted to both inform you as well as to encourage Mr Copeland to stop his hate spam campaign against Papua New Guineans. Shortly after this document began to be posted, the hate spam temporarily declined dramatically (for the first time in 2 years) before it resumed. This suggests strongly that we nailed the right person and caught them off guard. However, you should make your own judgement.

Mr Bruce Copeland first came to PNG briefly around independence, went back to Australia to serve in the military and to teach, returning to PNG a few years ago. An elderly man, Mr Copeland points to with pride and tends to exaggerate his limited military background but is still fit enough to have led tourist treks on the Kokoda trail, sometimes through Ecotourism Melanesia (www.em.com.pg/PNG/kokodatrack/kokodatrekfeedback.htm). He has also taught courses at different schools in PNG. Bruce Copeland started his own efforts against AIDS, which apparently AUSAID would not support because of Mr Copeland’s odd ideas. In response, Copeland began rubbishing AUSAID, members of the PNG Dept Health, and many associates in person, through e-mails and finally through blog postings. Much of this seems to have happened before the anti-PNG spam started. There was rumour on the internet that Mr Copeland caught AIDS from a relationship with PNG women, but Mr Copeland himself, on his blog spot, says about himself: “there is a probable good reason why he is not HIV positive while his son's mother was infected.” Presumably his wife died of AIDS, the status of his son is unclear. A more likely explanation is simply that Mr Copeland’s self importance and righteousness have bumped against the rejection of his ideas by high level people, to create the current mental disturbance inside his head.

There is no doubt Mr Copeland does (did) cares about PNG. However what we’ve read and been told indicates that he cares about PNG in a patronising way characteristic of colonial era expats who expect that you do things their way. Mr Copeland has not related well with many educated Papua New Guineans who know him. They have described Mr Copeland as extremely stubborn with a know it all attitude, acting like the final judge and leading punisher of anything he doesn’t like. However rather than believe other people’s words about Mr Copeland’s personality, it is best to see it in full view on his own blog (Family Positive Living AIDS Holistics (http://familypositiveliving.blogspot.com).

Bruce Copeland’s type of domineering personality would fit perfectly with a PNG village environment. He could expect to be given respect, no one would be so impolite as to disagree with him, and many would assume that because he was a foreigner, everything he says must be true. This kind of personality would also be the kind that might post hundreds of defamatory internet postings against various Papua New Guineans with the goal of destroying their reputations, done simply because that person decided that his victims were doing evil and thus should be destroyed.

Mr Copeland used to post openly on some other people’s blogs. He was a frequent contributor on the PNG Attitude blog until they banned him in mid 2011. His personality and bizarre e-mail spams were discussed at length on several respected PNG blogs: PNG Attitude by Keith Jackson (asopa.typepad.com/), Nancy Sullivan blog (http://www.nancysullivan.typepad.com/), pngexposed by anonymous (pngexposed.wordpress.com), and Malum Nalu’s blog (http://malumnalu.blogspot.com).

Reading Bruce Copeland’s own words on the internet, a few hatreds and obsessions become obvious:

1 HE IS MILDLY OBSESSED WITH STRONG PNG WOMEN, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO TRICK EXPAT MEN. Maybe this is because he has been a victim himself. On his blog he writes: “If the overseas advisors are to be believed, the women and young girls of this country are being abused by men wanting sex. That is partly true. There is another story. Many young girls are able to hold-up expatriate and national men and take their money.” He also writes: “Particularly in the highlands, many women are strong and violent.” Most of his defamatory spam postings against Papua New Guineans target highlands women and their families, and this may explain why he focuses on them.

2 HE IS TOTALLY OBSESSED THAT GAYS HIDE EVERYWHERE, SECRETLY PROMOTING PRO-GAY AGENDA. On his blog, he writes: “Even gay boys are looked after by family in PNG traditional culture. Family influence has to be removed if gay boys are to be brought to the urban areas and taken to bed by expatriate gays.” Also: “Gay men have long been part of Pacific culture and have taken their place among families who turned a blind eye to sex as they grew to manhood.” Elsewhere on his blog, he writes: “our email messages on Positive living have always been blocked by someone in Exxon Mobil. The reason given is that the message is offensive. Perhaps there is a small clique of expatriate gays and lesbians employed in Exxon Mobil.” Mr Copeland blames gays, rather than his own odd ways of dealing with people, as responsible for what appears to be total ignoring of him by AIDS policy makers.
Copeland also thinks gays control environmental groups such as greenpeace and writes: ““The nation has to watch the Greens Party. With Dorothy Tekwie as president, there are many environmental issues. Present members may not realize the PNG Greens have a hidden gay and lesbian agenda just like their opposite number in Australia.” This would explain why ‘Brice Copeland’ took RH’s side in a recent e-mail spam regarding the controversy over the Pomio land grab by RH, in which Greenpeace got involved.
Up until recently, this gay obsession didn’t come out in the spam postings on PNG web sites, except for the following obsession that Mr Copeland frequently displays:

3 HE HAS AN ANAL OBSESSION which becomes apparent reading the postings on his blog site. For example Mr Copeland writes in the royal third person style that he “has a long memory for physiology and a long recall of all the basics from study over 50 years starting with Grade 11 Zoology in Queensland in 1962. He recalls studying the main gut parasite that infects anus licking gays in Papua New Guinea.” Mr Copeland complains that Australian Prof Michael Toole, Head of the Centre for International Health at the Burnet Institute in Melbourne and Professor of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at Monash University, once told an audience that he, Bruce Copeland, was “quite anally fixated, mentally ill and obsessed.” At one point Prof Toole e-mailed this to AIDS workers in PNG: "For too long we have all sat back and accepted Bruce’s sick, anal-obsessed ravings. He can only get away with it because he’s hiding behind the inadequate legal system of PNG.”
Papua New Guineans have had to see spam postings for over 2 years that focus on anal sex or things stuck up the anus, like this one:
“get some kau kau up your arse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On his own blog, Mr Copeland brings up the anus topic repeatedly, explaining his obsession in this way: “It is the gays whose lives centre around the anuses of other gays. They are fatally fixated on anuses and faeces. AIDS Holistics is just the messenger.” A recent posting (http://www.network54.com/Forum/46538/thread/1323008850/last-1323008850/HERE%27S+THE+REAL+BRUCE+COPELAND%2C+A+CLOSET+GAY+WHO+HIDES+BEHIND+FAMILY+VALUES) accuses Bruce Copeland of being a closet gay, which might explain Mr Copeland’s anal fixation. Mr Copeland denies this allegation, saying it is probably an American gay who wrote it.


4 HE STEREOTYPES THAT PAPUA NEW GUINEANS LIVING IN AUSTRALIA ARE PARASITES. Again and again such postings have appeared on pngscape as well as on a completely different forum (http://www.network54.com/Index/10389), simultaneous with the appearance of anti-Kelegai postings. For example:
“fark off BACK TO THE PHILIPPINES!!! November 17 2011, 1:05 PM
theres only one thing worse than a scumbag sscabbing PNG family, and thats a farking Filipino parasitic family!!!!! Fark off back to the Philippines!!!”. Here’s another example:
“The kelegais are deliberately conning Australia December 1 2010, 4:08 PM
heres whats really going on, these Kelegais simply hate Australia. thats what all this conning and ripping people off is about. THEY DONT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT AUSTRALIA.
GET THE FARK OUT OF AUSTRALIA YOU KELEGAI KANTS”


5 ALTHOUGH HE HAS APPARENTLY BEEN MARRIED TO A PAPUA NEW GUINEAN, he has shown hatred to white women marrying Papua New Guinean men. Emails apparently from Mr Copeland to white Australian NGO woman Lydia Kaliap, exposed on Nancy Sullivan’s blog included this one: “Black cock whore! White cocks can't satisfy so you head up to PNG!”


6 HE HAS STEREOTYPED ALL PAPUA NEW GUINEANS AS UNGRATEFUL FOR OUTSIDE HELP. For example he wrote: “if theres one thing I learnt in PNG, MELANESIANS ONLY DO SOMETHING FOR SOMEBODY IF THEY EXPECT SOMETHING IN RETURN!!! Your a pack of users, and you all know damn well that is the heart of your problems: you all go around trying to get something off others all the time. Bruce”. This was followed later with many anonymous postings that are written as if they had come from a Bruce Copeland supporter, but are posted in bursts at the same time as anti-Kelegai postings: “i met bruce copeland on a couple of occassions and honestly the previous message was so unfair to him. he came to your country to try to help you and then you write a message like that about him. no wonder png is going down the ***** tube. your just ungrateful unnapreciative selfish people YOU ALL DESERVE TO DIE OF AIDS AFTER WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT BRUCE.”


7 HE HAS STEREOTYPED THAT WE PNG EDUCATED ELITE ARE SPOILT LAZY SLACKERS. On his blog he writes: “Some years ago, I worked in a business college in Port Moresby teaching Business Communication. Among many other skills, I taught the skill of combining sentences into Sweet English by Mastery Learning. I would help the students along exercise by exercise. Then I was to leave and a PNG teacher took over. He just set the work and sat back. Students did not master the skills. They mainly got the patterns wrong. Some PNG teachers would have a bad attitude when it comes to Mastery Learning. They do not demonstrate and help students. They just like to see students get the work wrong.”

Mr Copeland’s general strategy is to defame through repetition rather than through substance. He never presents detailed evidence or analysis to support his allegations but relies heavily on innuendo and vagueness to convict. Maybe Mr Copeland does not offer details about the Papua New Guineans he attacks probably because he barely knew them if at all. If he had laid out his allegations in a normal, mature way, offering details and engaging in discussion, his postings might be received differently and more positively. But instead he repeatedly puts on postings which lack substance, and in the same unprofessional way as also appears in many of his blog postings.

In at least one case, Mr Copeland seems to have picked a Papua New Guinean name off a Townsville online newspaper (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2011/04/21/225145_news.html), then rubbished that person in pngscape postings:

doesnt this scumbag toke kewe have awife in townsville? farken hell, i feel sorry for townsville people. i bet hes been farkin little boys there too!!!”

WARNING TO ALL WANTOKZ: Mr Copeland does not need to know you to find your name and make you the center of his porn/hate spam. Any Papua New Guinean living in Australia could be an unwitting victim of Mr Copeland’s spam and postings. There is evidence that he’s on Facebook: “We are watching everything you say on Facebook and other websites, You have been warned!”. It would not be surprising if Mr Copeland picks some of his PNG victim’s names directly from Facebook.
Those posting on pngscape’s Romance and Lover’s board should be very cautious when corresponding with anonymous people. It could be Bruce Copeland who is trying to learn enough about you to rubbish you.

The pattern of obsessive spamming over the last 2 years amounts to stalking and harassment which is illegal in Australia. However by focusing on Papua New Guineans who are Australian residents but not citizens, the spammer can pick on people who don’t know local law and may be reluctant to contact authorities and appear ungrateful for their residency.

On PNG Attitude blog, Aussie expat Lydia Kailap agrees that Bruce Copeland has mental issues and explained what she thinks is the reason: “I have a certain amount of empathy for people like Bruce; who live at a grassroots level and daily endure the injustice of the people of PNG. It creates a level of frustration unknown to most human beings and can be debilitating. Perhaps his frustration has overcome him.... and I (for one) would not blame him for that. It is a very difficult and frustrating life when working (for nothing) in PNG to help the forgotten people....when you see (all around you) spivs who get big money for doing nothing. After all, from what I can gather, he has lost his wife and child to AIDS and gone on to set up an organisation to help AIDS sufferers; with no help from anyone or any funding. So he gets a bit "unhinged"; can you blame him? That is a huge loss and a great sacrifice on his part. He is lapun already; but still doing a job that most would never even consider doing. Mardi for him!”

Here is what Mr Copeland wrote back in thanks to Lydia Kailaip for the above defence, e-mailed from brucecopeland65@gmail.com (taken from Nancy Sullivan blog), containing Mr Copeland’s usual anal obsession: “Your mouth, a$s and c$nt stink, Lydia, that we can smell it from a mile away!” “We are watching your every move and every word you say Lydia, and when we strike, a rocket will be placed into your dirty black cock-loving anus!”

Bruce Copeland knew for nearly a month that he was being blamed for the above hate e-mails but only in early December did he begin to confront (on his blog site) the information contained in this information posting. That is not exactly the kind of reaction one would expect from a man who had been wrongly accused. On his blog, Mr Copeland boasts that he is a master of defending himself against defamation, yet Rule 1 for anyone being falsely accused is to immediately address the allegations, fully and completely. It has now been over 3 weeks since Bruce Copeland was accused of being the culprit in back of all the anti-PNG hate spam that has covered the PNG internet discussion sites. Mr Copeland continues to ignore this allegation.

Basically the PNG internet is too small for there to be two people having the same strange combination of obsessions that appear not only in the anonymous spam postings, but also on Mr Copeland’s own blog site.

Overall, Bruce Copeland has shown the following ways of interacting on the internet:

1 He always used his real name on noncontroversial postings (such as PNG history articles posted more than a year ago on PNG Attitude Blog) and of course on his own blog site.

2 He has gotten into strong tok paits under his own name on some internet sites to the point where he had to be banned (PNG Attitude blog). An obsessive combativeness that borders on seeing opponents as enemies is apparent in these fights, an attitude that would not be surprising coming from a person who had been in the military and was mighty proud of that.

3 He has openly spammed PNG health officials with angry signed e-mails (see: http://asopa.typepad.com/asopa_people/2011/01/now-copeland-abuses-pngs-head-of-health.html), and continued spamming even after offended recipients told him to stop. This pretty much follows the same pattern as the anonymous postings that rubbish Papua New Guineans on PNG discussion sites.

4 He admits to have posted under multiple anonymous pen names on the same web site (documented in early 2011 on PNG Attitude): “Keith - I am not happy that you have come out on the side of the gays/lesbians and paedophiles of Australia in opposing AIDS Holistics. I have been loyal to you for a long time even writing key reports on your blog with false pen names.” This kind of sneakiness would fit any a person who was posting anonymous hate spam on the side.

5 Related to the above, he almost certainly has used different email addresses and pseudo-Bruce Copeland names on postings on the internet as well as on e-mails against other expats, including white women (documented on Nancy Sullivan blog). Mr Copeland would have to be one of the few people who would know all e-mail addresses to which the spam was sent. It took many weeks of silence after these e-mails had been sent and fingers pointed in his direction for Bruce Copeland to finally post a denial on his blog. Conspicuously he offers no alternative suspects nor makes any attempt to explain why he couldn’t be the spammer.

6 Although Mr Copeland demonstrates from postings on his own blog that he knows he is the main suspect for the anti-PNG spam, the only time he has gone on the pngscape.net site by name, he did not address the allegations that he is the notorious PNG hate/porn spammer. On that one occasion, his signed postings were followed in very short order by the usual anonymous spam. It is strange that he promotes himself as a friend of PNG with Papua New Guinean friends on his blog yet has not discussed the allegations against him on pngscape.net, the internet discussion site visited by the most Papua New Guineans.

During the last month or so Mr Copeland has deteriorated in his internet writing, getting sloppy at keeping separate the style and content in what he writes and e-mails under his real name versus what he apparently writes anonymously. That growing overlap made it clear that the same hand was responsible for all of it. Recent anonymous spam postings defend himself while continuing his traditional lashing out at certain Papua New Guineans:
“Re: BRUCE COPELAND TRIED TO HELP PNG YOU UNGRATEFUL BASTARDS
November 25 2011 at 10:34 AM
yeah look this pervious message about bruce is just all crap. he doesnt have a problem with wome who stand up for themselves, in fact he was a great supporter of womens rights in PNG. your a fuken idiot whoever wrote the previous message, probably that whore Philma Kelegai again. GET A PROPER JOB PHILMA!!!”

Also, recently on pngscape, as well as on http://www.network54.com/Index/10389. multiple Bruce Copeland obsession topics are mixed into multiple postings put up during a single, short period of time. This again suggests that only one person creates all this spam. For example:
“A new STD has hit the streets of PNG! Its called "KeleGAYensis" Symptoms included: flashing breasts at tourists and then demanding money fingering onesself in pubic toilets whinging for money whenever you see a whiteman and shoving bananas up your vagina when nobody is looking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Another example which blends Mr Copeland’s obsession with gays with his hatred for the Kelegai family: “kelegais xmas message for PNGians

You need to all get in touch with your gay side !!!”

Postings like the one above helped provide the most conclusive pieces of evidence linking Bruce Copeland to the whole porn/hate spam campaign that has flooded PNG discussion sites for years.

On 22 November, Bruce Copeland briefly visited pngscape by name following one of the early re-posts of this document and wrote: “basically in most cases if you have AIDS you are not allowed into Australia and as PNG has an AIDS epidemic at the moment more and more PNGians are being denied entry to Australia. I tried my guts out to help PNGians with AIDS, and it broke my heart to see young gurls and wives with AIDS, but its up to you guys now, your men are so disgusting and selfish that I dont know what your gonna do to save yourselves... Bruce Copeland”.

The above posting 1) appeared at the same time as anti-Kelegai spam posted in another part of pngscape and 2) was quickly followed by anonymous postings that carried the same theme but in a hateful way:
“PNGians are the most disgusting breed in all the world!!!

Yeah. blame Australia, thats aways the PNG answer. Never mind the billions of dolars you people have ripped off. Never mind the hundresd of thousands of women raped and tortured. You PNG people always lie and blame other countries especialy Australia, NOW IT IS COMING OUT ABOUT THE DIGUSTING RAPES AND TIRTURING YOU PEOPLE DO. It should be noted that postings on pngscape.net are not all that frequent, with maybe 1 or 2 people posting every hour or even less often. The hate spam, when it occurs, can consist of up to a dozen postings within the space of maybe 30 minutes. This strongly indicates that it is all coming from the same hand.

The only other expat that anyone has ever been mentioned on the internet as being a possible suspect is a Mr Daniel Collins of Tully/Cairns. However, there is no indication that this Mr Collins is obsessed with HIV AIDs or anus issues. Nor has Mr Collins ever been involved by name in tok paits with others on the internet, as has Mr Copeland.

Wantoks, all the above explains why many arrows point to Mr Bruce Copeland as the man in back of the anti-Papua New Guinean spam that began in mid-2009. Mr Copeland knows we are on to him. He has a history of keeping up with everything said about him on the internet, using his own blog on more than one occasion to rubbish back any critics.

In rebuttal to this document you are now reading, Mr Copeland initially responded with his usual hateful anonymous spam. Only after 2 weeks did a response to this document appear on his blog, and he denied nothing, only sputtered his usual obsessions and said he didn’t read the contents of this document anyway. Nearly 3 weeks passed after this document first appeared on pngscape.net and many obscure and inactive PNG discussion sites before Mr Copeland actually confront some of the information on this posting but until now has never directly denied that he is the author of the PNG hate/porn spam. That strange omission is hard to ignore.

As Melanesians we should all feel sympathy to this lost soul and pray for a man who has become victim of his own excesses and extremes, who thinks he’s at war with all kinds of imagined enemies, conducting himself on the internet like a small child. Today Bruce Copeland’s deteriorating brain drives him like a machine to try and destroy people, beginning with expats and now including a number of Papua New Guineans. It is a very sad ending to a life that otherwise might have been celebrated for service and dedication.

If Bruce Copeland were to stop anonymously spamming the PNG sites and stick to his own blog, there would be no reason to keep re-posting this information. However it is likely that Mr Copeland’s mental problem prevents him from stopping. That being the case, this information you are reading now will have to be re-posted as necessary, with its contents slowly becoming more extensively indexed in Google, finally reaching the point when anyone typing Bruce Copeland’s name into Google will immediately come across the story of his anonymous spam attacks and Mr Copeland’s double life on the internet.

Readers should investigate for themselves all viewpoints and come to their own conclusions as to Bruce Copeland’s mental state and the likelihood of him being the one in back of all the hate spam we have had to put up with for over 2 years. Let Bruce Copeland defend and deny to his fullest extent.

Note-In the past Mr Copeland has sometimes replied to this information posting by putting up more anonymous spam. The best thing is to ignore him since he shows no interest in discussing the allegations against him like an adult.
