A relative of Collins has said that his fixation on sex and tendency to imagine things has their roots in his upbringing. As a kid he was shy and often retreated into a fantasy world to forget his nightmarish home life. In an effort to impress those around him sometimes he would spin incredibly outlandish tales – something he continued to do long after leaving school. The relative, who asked not to be named, said Collins “is a nut job – he's a time bomb waiting to explode.”When caught out by his lies, there were flashes of violent temper. She said Eric would often became so angry he would repeatedly punch himself in the head.
“He said there was some messed-up stuff that happened to him when he was a kid,” the relative said.
Collins has always found it hard to separate fact from fiction. At times he has denied rumours that in fact didn't even exist, starting the gossip himself.
The relative noted that Collins “will create a conflict, then will take himself out and deny the content of the story, which he in fact started.”
