Subject: 86 Glastron w/120hp chevy, choke problem

The automatic electric choke on my engine does not work properly. I checked and there is power to the choke and the spring is intact. However, on the back side of the carb where the buttererfly rod protrudes, there is not a spring attached or any mechanism that would close the choke. What makes the choke close and open? Last season I tied the choke open with a wire tie and started it with starting fluid. Any help?
