Subject: 175 Sport Jet Problem

Anyone experience a sudden loss of performance with no warning? I run about for about 2 hours and suddenly seems that I am running on 3 cyl's. W/o touching the throttle, it goes from 2000 rpm to 3000 rpm and then back again. Fuel in the inline canister (just changed)looks clean. New plugs and the shop said it ran like a new motor. They test with a water hose at idle. Runs just as bad as before I took it in to the shop. It is a '98 175 hp.

When it does this, try UNPLUGGING the ECU on the starboard side of the engine. It's the electronic box with the big black plug on the front of it. The plug has a catch on the side you must unlock before it will unplug. The ECU controls the ignition boxes with overrev protection, overheat, no injection oil, the warning horn, etc. The service manual even tells you the engine will run without it. It won't have automatic enrichment without the ECU so warm up the engine before unplugging the ECU. Once the engine is warm, the ECU doesn't change the spark advance.

My ECU failed and every time the boat went airborne the overrev circuit CUTOUT THE SPARK completely! Boat did some nasty, dangerous things. Unplugged the ECU and the problem went away. Replaced the ECU with an IMPROVED MODEL that even has a wire to clip so the damned oil injection horn stops beeping after you remove the oil injection system and things are fine now.

Anyone keeping their SportJet should be running premix gas, anyway. I'm approaching 1000 hours on 40:1 Exxon or Texaco TC-W3 and have lost less than 5# of compression since new!

I have the 1999 Alumaweld Intruder 20' Sport Jet 175hp, I've been looking at the differences in the 210hp sport jet..? only looks like maybe a timing change to gain 250rpm and the impeller change out to a 4blade unit? anyone familiar with this? and where to buy the impeller if this is all that is different? thanks...

I've got a 175 spotjet on a 18' aluminum riverboat. I'm having problems with it icing up. A milky oily gunk covers the carbs , when it plugs up. I've been running it in high humidity conditions. To un plug it I blow out the brass vent tubesin the barrel of each carb. Can you tell be the cause of this situation, and how can I prevent it.

Thanks
