Subject: Big time brick wall-John Ellsworth Wolf

I have been searching for information about John Wolf's childhood on and off for some time now. According to military records, he was born on 10 April 1894 in Omaha, Nebraska. According to family stories, his parents died in 1900 and he was sent to an orphanage. He was supposedly adopted and ran away from his adopted family. The next time we can prove his existence is near Rushville, Nebraska in 1917. He was married to Margret Mills and had 5 children 3 of whom are still living. My theory is that he changed his name between his birth and 1917. We can't seem to find any record of him during those dates. Is there a way to find out about possible name changes during that time period? If anyone has any information, I would sure be glad to check it out. Thanks.
