Amphibian Engineers

I am looking for some information on my fathers unit. I have written to NARA and have been told that the files were lost in a fire, all I could get was a discharge paper. It is a little blurred but it looks like the unit was 532nd Amphibian Engineers. My father died in 1965, his name was John Ausbon, he enlisted in Oct. 1942 at camp Lee VA. He received several medals and ribbons (all gone now) Looks like he did most of his time in the Philippines and New Guinea. I don't know much about the military, so I may have to get someone to explain some of it to me. I was only 3 when my father died and I don't have much to go on, other than stories. I would appreciate an info. or guidance you may have to help me become closer to my dad.
