I do hope this is your missing Smith
When you go to familysearch:
Click on SEARCH ON TOP OF SCREEN,
Click on CENSUS on left
In cesus box 1880 U.S. Censes
FIRST NAME BOX: S.S.
LAST NAME BOX: Smith
BIRTHPLACE COUNTRY: U.S.
STATE: All
BIRTH YEAR: 1845
BIRTH YEAR RANGE: leave blank

This will bring up a screen with 39 S. Smiths born in 1845
Scroll down to # 25 and this should be the right one.
Although it does not give his parents names, you can see they were both born in TN.
Please give this a try and let me know if this is your Smith.
Then we can carry on with the next lesson on the Smiths
