I received this inquiry recently and am hoping someone may have more history or info on this period in Isle La Motte, VT and Rouses Point,Clinton Co. NY.

Hello, I am an archaeologist at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. I'm not sure I have any information for you, but you may be able to help me. This is a roundabout story, but stick with me. I am doing some research trying to find the name of a canalboat which is sunk off of Isle La Motte. The canalboat was found in the early 1980s, but no one has ever been able to put a name to it. Recently we found a refence in the Plattsburgh Republican from 1846 which seemed to fit the description of this vessel:

Accident. ? Mr. Daniel Hall, an industrious citizen of this town, who was employed in carrying stone on a small sloop from Gilman?s quary to the new Fort at Rouse?s Point, was drowned on the night of the 2d. inst. When within a few miles of Rouses?s Point a sudden squall struck his vessel, which was heavily laden, and in endeavoring to throw the anchor over he was caught by the cable, the vessel partly capsized, filled and sunk ? taking him down with it. His son and another man who were on board, saved themselves with much difficulty (Plattsburgh Republican 5 September 1846).

I thought it would be easy to figure out who owned Gilman's quarry (which should be on Isle La Motte as all of the stone for Ft. Montgomery was quarried there), leading hopefully to the name of their canalboat. However, I can't find any references to a Gilman's Quarry.

I next looked to see if any Gilman's had owned canalboat in the area. I found the one Zebulon Gilman from Champlain had owned a canalboat named Great Northerner at just about the right time. My question to you is do you know anything about this person? Is there any connection to Isle La Motte or quarrying in your family.

Thanks
Adam Kane
