Subject: Gen Richard Montomery BENJAMIN (Revolutionary War)

My GG Grandmother was born in Alabama in 1871. Her name was Madeline BENJAMIN
She had two sisters Mary(b.1878) and Amanda (b.unknown).
According to a 1900 Census her mother was born in Alabama and her father in PA.
I have been unable to find this family in a Census for 1880.
According to oral family history, Madeline would say that we are decendants of a General from the Revolutionary War.
It is supposed to be a Gen. Richard Montgomery Benjamin. Madeline named her first son Gerald Montgomery.
I have been unable to find the names of Madeline's parents.
I don't know where I should begin this search. Is there anyone ELSE searching a Benjamin line or can someone tell me what I should try next?
