Peacocks are recruiting him. He is from Long Island originally. Hear he is 6-3, great defender, slasher type tough kid would be a very good replacement for Gooding should he decide to leave. Also hear he has other offers so don't know if he comes.

Interesting tidbits on Akeem Bennett from the past.....

"July 26, 2006

Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting

The Long Island Lightning gave Derrick Rose and Eric Gordon fits with some stingy defense in their quarterfinal match up. Rose and Gordon certainly did their damage, but they had to work hard for it.
Left hander Akeem Bennett did a nice job containing Rose and keeping him out of the lane. The only problem for Bennett is that Rose got his jumper going during a pivotal stretch during the second half to break the game open."

"Bennett, a physical 6-foot-2 combo guard, said he will play at Laurinburg Prep and is hearing from USC after the Trojans saw him keep O.J. Mayo in check at the Kingwood Classic."

The other award winners in the NBA were 6'0 Mike Coburn from Mt. Vernon (H.S.) NY, who got the Sportsmanship Award; 6'2 Akeem Bennett from Laurinburg (Institute) NC, who was the Best Defender, as well as one of Howard Garfinkel's favorite players in camp; .........

We also think it's important to mention that some of the other unheralded players and sleepers that we mentioned yesterday, including 6'3 Nick Hendra from New York (Xavier) NY, 6'4 Jr Kim English from Randallstown (H.S.) MD, 6'0 Justin Archie from Compton (Centennial) CA, 6'2 Akeem Bennett from Laurinburg (Institute) NC, and 6'0 Jr Josh Spivey from Aston (American Christian) PA, beat out some pretty good players to make the roster of the Orange-White All-Star Game. ...... Bennett not only locks up his man defensively, but he's a great competitor and thrives in an up tempo setting."
