Subject: Conley: Question for Oldtimer
In reply to: oldtimer#1 's message, "Re: Anybody else notice ?" on Tuesday, March 10, 03:43:32pm

Is there a past Peacock (or current MAAC) player that comes to mind when you saw Conley workout?
Jerome Davis?
Ron Yates?
Kamal McQueen (circa freshman year)?
Ed Strong (going way back)
Tommy Best?
Alex Franklin (Siena)?
Schneider (Marist)?
Gadsen (Rider)?
Big Guy from Canisius?
Just trying to get a read on the type of player you saw....anybody who had a keen enough eye to see the potential in Nick Leon during the first third of this season is good enough in my book!
Appreciate it.

Loyal,

Haven't followed SPC basketball until the last two years. My memories go back to the 60's and early 70's. Friend of mine Pete O'Dea comes to mind but athletes today are somewhat different - bigger, stronger, potentially better but some are missing the "heart" and intensity of years ago.

In any event, the best way that I can describe Darius ( only have seen him play about four times ) is that he is big, strong and suprisingly mobile for his size. Looks like an intelligent player who is team oriented. Can play face to basket or back to basket. Once he boxes you out you will not rebound over him. Saw him put back several dunks that look like they were going to bring the rim down.

Four games cannot tell everything, but in those games he was matched up against Ryan Bacon and Darius more than held his own. Bacon, of course, now has another full season under his belt and has improved dramatically so I heasitate to compare them now. What I do see is that are complimentary type players. In other ways they both can play on the same court together and improve each others performance. As you know this is not always the case. In any event, even if Darius either needs time to get in game shape or is not quite as good as the player I saw - he should help, big time. LOL
