Siena, who the bigs should rightfully have been avoiding, played the 41st toughest non-conference schedule in D-1. Fairfield played the 39th, best in the MAAC. Heck, even Canisius was in the top half at 130. We were 328 out of 344.

Siena managed to get games with Pitt and Kansas, and a tournament spot with Tennessee and Okla St. Fairfield played Memphis, UConn, Va Tech and Mizzou.

The major teams will play mid majors. Here are some of the mids that the four #1 seeds played: UConn: Western Carolina, Hartford, Buffalo and the aforementioned Fairfield. Pitt: Miami OH, Akron, Belmont, Vermont and Siena. (Oh yeah, FDU played Pitt. C'mon, now!) Louisville: Western Kentucky (they lost), Austin Peay, Ohio, South Alabama. UNC: Penn, UC Santa Barbara, UNC-Ashville, Oral Roberts, Asheville, Valpo, College of Charleston.

Coach Leckie liked the idea of scheduling "up" because it helped toughen the team and it put some needed cash in the College's coffers. Bob played the likes of Northwestern, Boston College, Xavier etc. He was hoping some of the big guarantee money would be directed in the way of athletics but Father Loughran nixed that idea. So Bob stopped reaching out for the "guarantee" games. They are out there, readily available. All we need to do is ask.
