Read the Iona board for comments on the game and as one would expect their regular posters are upset about last night's game and their team's performance the second half of this season. Again, however, we find the comment that SPC is a bad team, how could we lose to them. While it's not all the posters, it is a theme with every team we beaten - not their coaches but their fans (some).
No need to become upset. In fact, I sort of take jajk's point of view - amusement. Let's take Iona as an example. Following their team somewhat, they do have some decent/average level MAAC players spread throughout their roster. As Loyal pointed out they had much more scoring from their bench than we do. But if one were to analyze their players it amazes me to think that some think so highly of their potential.
If posting on their board I would ask some of their more rational posters who they would rather have Ryan Bacon or any of their bigs including Springer? Wesley Jenkins or anyone they could name as their guard/scorer? Nick Leon or even their freshman star Machado (or anyone else) at point? Case closed. We may still have holes to fill but when I look around the league and especially ignoring this years senior class I would ask the same question of almost every other MAAC team. Don't know what their answer would be but I know what it should be.
In any event, I'll let jajk fight that fight on the MAAC board reminding some of those not so knowledgeable basketball partisans that maybe SPC has some players equal or better than those on their vaunted teams. It's getting harder to talk trash against us with each and every win.
I always wonder about those fans who so easily throw around the word awful to describe a team or a player . Maybe they never played the game . Maybe they are trying to justify their predictions or expertise that have gone terribly awry . Maybe they are just plain mean-spirited .
I got a kick out of a post a while ago by one Siena fan who is wrong much, much more often than he is right . This guy , who is always demeaning our program , our facilities and our players posted after being at the SPC - Siena game at the Y that he had not seen a bb game that close in a long time . He was impressed by the size , the speed , the athleticism of the players , the speed of the game ( naturally he was emphasizing the Siena players ). You would think maybe he would learn a little from this before so easily demeaning players in the future . But that was not to be the case . As a number of us have said through some tough times , if a young man is giving it his all every time he steps on the court we are appreciative fans .
The big three came up big in a big game last night . You might think Iona's coach would have some Peacock players on his ballot for all-MAAC teams .But we do not perform that way on both ends without all the guys on the team stepping up . One game at a time , four more times . Eight straight MAAC wins would be more than enough . Fans are allowed to dream .
Always amusing how some of these posters will denegrate the opposition when their favorites suffer a loss. I guess it offers them comfort and a release to pile additional insult on their guys by remarking on how shitty their opponent was.
Another pattern you see on a number of the boards, most notably apparent with Iona, Canisius, is to attack the coaching staff when things go bad. Heck, even one who I consider one of the better coaches, Joe Mihalik of Niagara, is criticized, not for his lack of winning, but for not scheduling up in quality.
I guess it's always easier to blanket the coaches with criticism rather than individual players. As I recall, wasn't too long ago when Dunne was bearing all of the brunt for not making due with the talent on hand. Funny, as Cindy remarked, how the appearances made by the naysayers suddenly become scarce and, if I may boldly suggest, non-rependant, in these better times.
