Subject: Father Heavey update

This update is from Carmen Galasso: Fr. Heavey’s illness has taken a decided turn for the worse. He has been in a coma, or semi-coma for three weeks. Last Monday it looked like he might be coming out of it but he slipped back. Late on Friday he suffered another seizure. At this point we have to face the fact that his chances of recovery are very small to non-existent.

In accordance with Fr. Heavey’s clearly stated wishes, on the advice of his doctor, and after consultation with his brother Jesuits and his closest friends, he will be transferred to hospice care on Monday. He will be going to the Compassionate Care Facility of The Atrium at Hamilton Park, 330 Ninth St. in downtown Jersey City.

We know that many of Fr. Heavey’s friends have wanted to visit him while he has been sick and have chafed at the restrictions on visitors necessary while he has been in the Medical Center. We would ask that if you come to v isit Fr. Heavey at the Atrium, that you do so between 10:00 am and 8:00 pm. (And not before 5:00 pm on Monday the 23rd.)

Be aware that he will not be aware of your presence in the room. Before deciding to visit you might ask whether you want your last memory of Fr. Heavey to be of an invalid in a hospital bed or of the dynamic person you spoke to at some recent party.

Thanks to all who have been praying for him and to those who sent cards and letters. Please continue to pray for him and pray that the Lord will receive him as warmly and kindly as Fr. Heavey received so many of us.

The Atrium is located at 330 Ninth St. in downtown Jersey City, between Brunswick and Monmouth. Parking is limited but there is a small paring lot across the street and down about 40 yards.

Daily updates on Fr. Heavey's condition are posted every afternoon here and on Fr Heavey's voice mail, 201-761-6123. The Atrium does not give information about patients by phone.
