Subject: Thank Goodness

We avoided a disaster.

Gleaned from stats:

Good job at the line by Nick. Efficient game by Ryan.

Subtracting Brandon Hall's contribution, take a peek at our assist to turnover ratio. Ouch!

Look forward to Cindy's report.

Glad to escape with a win in a gym that was way too hot, much too dark, and featured Jim Hague screaming over a much too loud PA system---quite unpleasant.
Subtracting Jenkins (due to uncle's death) from an already anemic offensive squad did not bode well. Nor did the time spent on the bench by our effective (5-5) inside presence of Ryan Bacon. His 7 boards,4 blocks and 12 points would have been enhanced had he played lomger. This was not to be as the officials took him out of the game with some very dubious calls.
I seldom site poor officiating since it is usually impartial and has a tendency to even out,but you got the impression there were some mercy calls on behalf of NJIT when the Peacocks were trying to open it up. These calls often victimized Bacon and with Jenkins out really made the road tough.
Looking at the stats you might think this was not the case, but a very large number of fouls were committed by NJIT and converted by SPC in the last minutes when the game was already decided.
To their credit SPC shot 86% from the line led by Nick's 13-14.
SPC struggled early in the game when no one could hit a shot and it appeared that Leon was trying to take up the slack of the missing Jenkins.
Keyed by very good defense -particularly in the second half the Peacocks were able to claw their way back against an obviously weak squad and their three zebra helpers.
Of note Brandon Hall's seven assists to one turnover and four steals. He would easily have had over ten assists if his mates would be ready to catch and finish.Over time I trust they'll learn to look for the ball when he drives to the basket.
Leon improved in the second half when he drove to the basket drawing fouls instead of forcing outsice shots like that turnaround three point attempt-ouch.
Akeem continues to struggle with his shooting but boarded well and played very tenacious d.
Costner also played well on D denying his man the ball, passing well, setting screens, and hitting a really pivotal three to open the game up. He also spent a good portion of the evening swinging from the rim after a thunderous dunk.
Jack Hill also continues his emergence with 4 boards in just eight minutes.
On the down side Reid did not have a good stint as he turned the ball over twice in just three minutes.

To Loyal..... yes our turnover to assist ratio outside of Hall's was not good, but it was matched by NJIT's 23-5 ratio.
About as bad as Barack felt when learning of his Illinois' buddy's problems. :-)With friends like he has in Chicago, who needs enemies?

Just to add to Cindy's very accurate description:

#1) The improving play of Costner really doesn't show in the stat line. Excellent defensive player although often over matched against the better bigs, Jordan fronts his man in the post ( Bacon tends to play behind ) and with his leaping ability makes the entry pass difficult. On offense, he is an excellent high post passer and a reasonable shooter. Still has the tendency to pass up the open shot which I hope will change as his (or JD's) confidence in him improves. Nice game.

#2) Bacon - as with most of our other players shows his real potential in the open court. Made some beautiful layups/dunks in transition. Probably runs the floor better than any big in the MAAC. Also beginning to show some moves down low. As stated previously, Ryan will really come into his own when we have a legitimate #5 up front. Ryan is an off his man rebounding and shot blocking machine who is much better freelancing than playing straight up defense.

#3) Leon - watch his actions and intensity. Nick is the real leader on this team. Always encouraging other players and has developed a good playing relationship with Hall and Wesley in the backcourt. All seem to be on the same page. At NJIT as with Cansius, Nick was overplayed and often rushed his outside shot. In both games he then decided to take it to the basket, often getting clobbered. The game took on a different tone when this started to happen. A very good and tough street wise player.

#4) Hall - the word for Brandon is solid. Every game he plays shows why he should be our point guard for the next few years. Excellent defender and gets the ball to the right players at the right time. If he needs to improve his game anywhere it is in his shooting. Not a bad shooter just not a deadly one. A lot of work in this area will pay big dividends.

#5) Gooding - played with great intensity. Maybe the hardest worker on the team. His lack of shooting ability, as we all know, is his achilles heal. Hard not to root for the kid.

#6) Hill - as Cindy observed getting incrementally better each game. Outstanding leaper, even at 6'8", Jack is beginning to be more aggressive and grab some rebounds. Should develop into a decent player and a valuable man in the rotation.

All the above being said we still are a poor team who, to this point, is neither underperforming nor over achieving. Still it's hard not to root for them because they do play hard. Watching NJIT atleast showed me that we do have some players that a future can be built around, NJIT does not. Our team does not need a complete revamping, as they do, just a few additions. Jenkins, Bacon, Leon, Hall and some of the rest are players - good players. We just need to fill our obvious holes. Whether we do that is IMO the big issue.

Agree with both of the above posts on all counts.First half was one of the worst halves of basketball i have personally ever witnessed at any level. Only criticism i have coaching wise was the constant shuffling of players ,no one seemed to get more than 2 minutes at a time , i thought never allowed anyone to get into the flow of the game or get untracked.
Defensive intensity of SPC in the second half especially Gooding, led to turnovers and created offense where none existed in the first half.Aggresive play of Leon driving to the hole getting fouled led to points.
Thought Bacon was outstanding in limited minutes due to fouls, also Costner continues to improve and is very comfortable at the high post where he excels using his passing skills and court vision and can hit the open three when it is given and continued fine play of Hall show some ray of hope.
One key sequence was a near turnover by Traore at the high post with Costner underneath led to a bad shot. Next time down they switched Costner up top hit a nice 3 from the top of the key to open up the lead to 9 at 39-30 to illustrate the point.
Our priorities should be a post player to help underneath, maybe Conley will help there and i think a wing shooter who is 6-5 or 6-6 for next year would really help the offense.
