but will take objection to feeling of so many, intellectuals and emotionals alike, that SPC is a doomed world. Many have little knowledge of the attention (negative) that Loughran imposed on this school. He disdained NCAA and did all in his power to under cut anything that might serve growth for SPC in that arena. While he was not proactive in destroying anything, he was proactive in eliminating budget support. Few will recall the disastrous softball scholarship affair that made the newspapers in Long Island and showed how poor SPC considered athletics and how duplicitous the AD could be. So with all that behind us, we now have a President who, at least, understands that athletics is a integral part of a successful college. His only fault as of now, is most likely a low knowledge of the issues and factors that contribute to its success. He very easily can place faith in some who are not up to the task, but does not mean that he will not follow through to altering the issues at SPC. The current economic times is not going to make it any easier, but any cursory review of the sum total of D1 athletes in the school shows that approximately 150 tuitions are had because of our participation in D1 athletics. While that might not change in an improvement of the athletic programs, one only needs to read the history of the Gonzaga story to understand that well run athletic programs improves enrollment in all areas. Biggest problem in these economic times is the academic side who would object to any sacrifices in their area for improvement in athletics. However we do now see a train of thought that appears to want to address these issue and the fatalists that seem to always arise are much more a negative factor than the school. Criticisms of current situations are not fatalists, but many seem to think they are. Yes the place may be still called a dump, but does anyone notice that the garage has been repaired, a fact that never would have occurred had not Loughran died. Progress is always slow and stymied by many mis-steps. Where it goes wrong is the defense of the issues that are wrong by many who just think the school is crap and deserves what it gets.
