if by we you mean Peacocks , Brandon Hall was rated higher than both by some . And Jenkins and Lampley were rated much higher in their senior years than Smythe or Williams in their senior years by many .

That is just not true. SPC wins a few games against the weaker teams in the MAAC and now you think we are a good team.Hall was never mentioned by anyone as better than anyone.. Hall has been a huge underachiever this year to boot.

As one who noted, early on, Brandon's need to become a reasonable scoring threat, let me say a few good things about his performance this year.

First of all he is a freshman. It takes almost all freshmen a while to get accustomed to D1 ball, no less a coaches system and plays. If Lampley didn't depart, I doubt if Brandon would have seen anymore playing time than Jack Hill. He has gained some valuable experience and looks like a confidant player and not a scared frosh.

Performed quite well for a first year player. Handles the ball as well as any point guard in the league, had a great assist/turnover ratio and was one of our better defenders. Strong player with a great body and not sacrificing very much quickness. No doubt he has areas of weakness but that is what college ball is all about. Some players improve their level of perfprmance, others do not. I'm sure this year was a valuable learning experience for Brandon.

One thing I feel very positive about having watched him play. At the very least John Dunne has a very valuable role player/back up point guard who can contribute a minimum of 15 minutes a game and help the club. As posted previously, if Belin and Conley perform as expected (once they learn the system) or if JD recruits another scoring threat at the #3, it won't really matter how much Brandon improves. Nick will become our point, as he has played at least half of every game this year, Wesley will play the #2 and Belin/Costner or ? will play the #3/#4.

Bottom line for me Brandon has and will be a contributor on a hopefully improved team.

Dunne made it clear last season that he sorely missed having a true point. I'm not so sure that Lamply would have played ahead of Hall.
With Lampley on the floor Nick would not have had the scoring opportunities that he had this season, and all the others shots would have been diminished by the number Daryl chucked up at 35%.
Accepting the fact that Brandon needs to shoot and penetrate enough to keep the opposition honest,I'd rather have him distribute to better scorers like Nick,Wes,and Bacon, than to have Daryl heaving up prayers.
BTW in approximately the same number of minutes per game Hall 79 assists 53 turnovers 33 steals,Lampley 48 assists 72 turnovers,25 steals.
With what we have, Brandon is the better offensive fit and I believe Dunne would have also, playing him ahead of Lampley.
Hall makes those around him better,I'm not sure Daryl did to as great an extent.

Cindy, thank you for stating what some of us said about DL all last year and got some temporary grief over it as you recall. That said DL was improving his shot selection and poorer tendencies and most likely have been given an opportunity to perform over a newcomer. What would have happened several games into the season is anybody's guess.

No question that IMO Brandon's performance this year was a net positive, especially for a freshman and I agree is a much better fit than Darryl. He will play significant minutes for us unless JD recruits somebody more wonderful. Like you I am happy to that we recruited Brandon.

Not sure how Brandon was "rated", but all would agree Brandon needs to play a lot better next year.
Point guard is a tough position to step into and even Jasper Walker had stops and starts his freshman season.
Next year we will better be able to judge if Brandon can eventually play anywhere near the level of Machado, or Moore, or Han, or the Niagara point guard.
If he can effectively distrubute and make end game free throws, that might be enough, if we pick up a fourth scorer.

Agree, point guard is a learning experience. One thing for sure, Brandon is a typical pure point and not a combo guard. Maybe he will add that scoring dimension but I sort of doubt it. We don't need him to score a lot, just become an offensive threat.

Sort of the same difference between Gooding and Costner. Jordan does a lot of good things on the court but is not the threat Akeem is. Some players never develop that scoring mentality.

My point about Brandon is that his play this year has proven that he gives JD some options. All teams need that 6th man option. If our newbies contribute as we expect, I'm not sure that we need Brandon as a starter. Who would you rather see at point, Brandon or Nick no matter how much Brandon improves? To me Brandon provides at the very least some valuable insurance and options. I say that understanding that Nick will score more at the #2 but if we recruit that additional 6'3" scoring guard or if Belin can play the #3 as well as #4 (like Gooding) then JD will have some nice options.

Lets stop beating arund the facts.Lampley was an overrated undersized selfish shooting guard and at the time he was recruited he exposed Dunnes recruiting weaknesses.Time to move on.Brandon is what he is a decent point guard.A good guy off the bench and if he can improve his offense {outside shot } a key contributor,

JAJK,

Who are the "many" besides yourself who had DL and Hall rated over Smythe and Williams? And don't include our staff.
