Local men's preview today lists top returnees without mentioning Bacon or Costner, yet lists Kabongo among top newcomers.

Also states the team strength is " the Peacocks have plenty of three point shooters". Huh?

Typical lack of research or lack of cooperation?

I think we all know by now that these preseason magazine and newspaper articles are fluff when it comes to reporting on SPC.
Even the eyewitness reports from the gym have very little credibility as we have learned in the past.
We only have to wait one more week to start forming our own opinions, whatever they're worth. But with a still young team,it will take a few weeks before the dust settles.
The question will be whether they will fluctuate between being a good team and a bad one,or a bad team and a horrible team. And by how much and how often in either case.

I feel our club has little ability to score, pass or defend against size on the front line. Don't think anyone is a threat to shoot beyond 1O feet, either. Other than Bacon, not sure where rebounds will come from.

This year will almost certaily be another play-in round quality season.

Hope (and Dunne's long term success) will be determined by how much Bacon, Jenkins and Leon improve + whether or not any of the newbies shows long term potential. Improvement by our frosh and sophs, I think, is the most we can reasonably expect this year.

I would say if Bacon, Jenkins and Leon do not take big steps forward, it will be hard for Dunne to be successful during his remaining tenure, as the roster basically is what it is for the next few seasons.

Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I have issues with Dunne , but Jenkins , Bacon , Lampley ( and Hogga )was a helluva a good recruiting class for him and staff . I like Hall and Reid a lot too and Shumate has some potential over his career if not right away . I don't know anything about Hill but am hopeful . Geez , this is not the time of year to be despairing . And Gooding improved significantly on some deficiencies as last year progressed . Even Traore showed some progress in the latter stages of last year . Rebounding and defense appear to problematic but a good coaching job and 40 minute effort by every player can overcome this kind of thing considering our talent relative to their schedule . Loyola , Niagara , Rider , Marist lost frontcourt size too , let's remember . We are unbeaten to date ! Run Wesley , run Darrell , run Ryan , run , baby , run !

jajk, absolutely. For the most part we are not playing against awe inspiring teams. The test for me is not talent but how we play as a unit, cut down turnovers (still a problem), rebound and run.True, we are still one big man away (Conley) but the rest of our squard is pretty decent and deep. Wonder if we'll have an early signing period announcement next week.

The team has looked excellent in two pre-season scrimages although against a talent level(still D1) not quite up to MAAC standards. Thus it's difficult to make projections for Conference performance. Any suprise should be on the upside not downside.

Oldtimer , nice to read . I am really looking foward to Saturday . The offseason is always too long and it seems to get even longer as you get older .

I'm not so sure I agree. We're just not getting the level of talent necessary to win a MAAC championship. We don't get any big bodies worth a damn and our PG play is often lukewarm at best.

In addition, some other teams in the MAAC have stepped up their talent level. In recent years, Siena and Manhattan have won first round games in the NCAA. Rider has a guy making a nice impact as a rookie in the Association. One of the surest ways to failure is to underestimate your opponent.

jajk, thanks. Regarding your observations above, I hope this helps. Evaluate as you will. You were the first to speak highly of Bacon before he even arrived on campus. He is everything you said he was and should open some MAAC Conference eyes this year. Problem is that he can't do it by himself and not for 30+ mimutes. If he gets help (this year or next) he'll be one of the top players in the league.

Regarding Hall and Reid. Both excellent players but freshmen. Hall is a true point with a D1 body and mental attitude. Excellent one on one defender but needs to learn positioning on the floor in a team defense. Handles well. Problem is that he will be initially stuck(as a frosh) behind Leon and Lampley but he should see some pretty good playing time depending on how he progresses.. Reid is a very physical player with a variety of tools but again is on a learning curve. Will show flashes of brillance but then struggle . You are also right on target about Shumate. Is a battler underneath but at 6'6" (?). Hill may suprise. Can rebound and put-back. Definitely not a "stiff".Also runs the floor(like Bacon) very well for his size.Jumps well and has a large wing span. Question in my mind is his toughness underneath. No opinion one way or the other on that. Expect him to contribute from the get-go due to our lack of height. Match-ups will determine how much.

One final word on your guy Lampley. Has impressed me with his attitude and is becoming a team player. While he and Leon are small, they do play well together. Darryl still has difficulty hitting with any consistency from the outside but has developed a nice little 10' pull up jumper. Should serve him well. Exciting to watch but needs to put the ball in the hole after one of his spectacular moves. Think he's getting there. We are pretty deep. Let's see if someone blossoms.

I'm excited to see how darrell has progressed from last year.... i think he was trying too much coming off the heels of being the star on a state champion high school team....... some criticism of last years class was a little much i think as they were all freshman!!! combine that with the fact that he really was never a PG in high school and he was teaming up with another awesome incoming SG... so he was going to be playing a "new" position..... whats hard to fathom is him not being money from behind the arc... as much as some say he isnt a shooter he was one of lindens best shooters ever... so that part is just mind boggling to me....

i understand the concern about the frontline but i just cant see them being as bad as last year..... you guys dont see at least 10 wins??? yeah i know that isnt that good but its what??? double last year?? something like that....

take care all!!! side note: his backcourt mate from linden desmond wade will be starting tomorrow as a freshman for the university of houston!!! if they get past georgia southern they get duke at cameron!!! how's that for baptism by fire!!! PEACE!!
