Subject: The Game

Was at the game with several of the faithful and some alumni from Staten Island. I'll leave the analysis to Cindy but I can't imagine a much worse performance. The only positive thing that remains for me is the effort the kids put forth. Hope they don't get to down on themselves. Tough to keep taking these beatings without even being competitive.

Agree with Loyal, hard to blame the coach for the scheme or the players for their effort which was good throughout but what is becoming painfully clear is the lack of talent.
With the exception of Jenkins ,I can't think of anyone else who would start on a MAAC team. Bacon would probably be in the 6-8 slots and probably has with Hall the potential in time to rise above that.
There are others who on their best nights might be contributors but are much too inconsistent.
Tonight's loss was ugly because I didn't see the talent level in Wagner that I saw in Lehigh.Wagner was a team that continually opened doors that we could not walk through.
The lack of any even medium range outside scoring threat up front is our fatal flaw. Without that, our guards, particularly Jenkins are overplayed and double teamed.
Even if the guards succeed in beating their man on the dribble, our opponents front line can back them up without fear that our forwards will convert and finish if the guards
dish off to them.
Realizing that we are only two games into the season,I have not yet abandoned all hope, but I am a lot more concerned about this team's ability to approach that 8-10 win number that most had hoped for.
So far Dunn's plans to run appear damned by our inability to rebound defensively and I don't see how that is going to improve in the near future.
The road doesn't get any easier with the next game at BU,who are picked to win their conference.I'll be there looking for any glimmer of improvement.

Have to agree on all counts Cindy. Can't see more than a 4 win type season based on what has been seen in the first two games.
Besides Jenkins only bright spot tonight was play of Reid in limited minutes. Made some mistakes in positioning but showed nice touch on shot ,good footwork laterally decent speed and athleticism. Will be far superior in time at the three to Gooding especially offensively if they work with him.
I thought play of Hall regressed a bit tonight. Same with Bacon. Lack of any ability to convert inside by Bacon,Costner and Traore led to extremem overplay of our guards.
Bottom line we were never in this after the first 10 minutes against one of the weakest teams in the NEC.Also looks like the run and press style shown against Lehigh has been abandoned since we did neither until the last 8 minutes or so in a desperate attempt to get back into it.
Also new 3 point line really seems to be affecting Leon.Passed some open looks and seemed very uncomfortable when he did take it.

One of the first times I can remember that everyone on this Board is in total agreement. What that tells me is whatever adjustments can be made will only be marginal for this season. Some of those may be as follows:

As SPC Fan stated give Reid more playing time. Let's see what he has to offer. Hall is only a freshman and I can understand both his natural style of play and his reluctance to become more offensively minded. But if he is not told to open it up a bit then his future use will be quite limited. For those who keep stats did he even take one shot? Can't recall. Hill is being used correctly but he looks lost out there. Hope he gains some confidence (stuffed twice).

The loss of Lampley hurts big time because as several posters pointed out we are pressing much less than intended due to limited bench quickness. Finally, I'm not smart enough to suggest a half court offense given our deficiencies. The plays currently being run are mainly pick and rolls designed to free either Jenkins or Leon. Problem is that as the play develops the opponents bigs jump out at our guards (as others have pointed out) without fear of our big being any threat as he rolls to the basket. They just ignore him and concentrate on our shooters. Result is a double team. A petersfan pointed out we also have no inside/out game. How many times were we burnt by Lehigh when their bigs, catching a pass, kicked it out to the corner for an open three. Wagner did also.

So much for analysis. It is quite apparent and repeated by all our posters what is stated above. The players are putting forth an effort and I hope it continues. A win somewhere would help morale. If, in fact, it will be a dismal season my only suggestion is to give those players who could help in the future more playing time and let them open up a bit regardless of the outcome. I'm basically talking Hall and Reid. Perhaps throw in some backdoor screens for Bacon. Wagner pulled off atleast three of them and they worked each time. Perfect type of play for Bacon who can sky. Frustrating yes, but moreso in that we need to see some positives aside from just effort. Hope Cindy reports some from Beantown.

You are right on the money.......this year is all about finding out if Bacon, Reid, Hall and Hill can eventually develop into solid MAAC players. That will be determined only by extensive floor time....even if at the expense of a win or two and floor time for Leon, Gooding and Traore....

Hall, Reid and Hill have to be in the top 7 rotation by January in order for us to make the best of a bad situation. Results are secondary to player development for the balance of the season, period.

In order for us to have any success over the next THREE seasons, three of the above four players have to become solid MAAC players PLUS Conley and the other player brought in for next season have to be solid contributors as well. This roster is a long, long way from being competitive and it "is what it is", for the most part, for the next three seasons.

From a 50,000 ft. perspective, the ability of Hall, Reid and Hill to become solid MAAC players will determine whether or not Dunne ever achieves a .500 season in the (gulp!) five years he is most likely destined to be at SPC.

Unless, of course, another extension is being drafted as this is written..... :>)
